Hero: one who trades himself for the safety of others.

Courage: one who escapes four armed guards in a dingy in

the middle of the ocean.

The Maersk Alabama captain, Richard Phillips, our hero!

American sea Captain Richard Phillips was rescued Sunday from Somali pirates. Phillipswho had been held hostage for three days in a lifeboat off the coast of Africa.

Three of the pirates were killed and one was arrested after a volley of gunfire in which Phillips escaped and was immediately rescued by the US Navy.

Phillips, 53, of Underhill, Vt., was transported to the USS Bainbridge nearby.
